DIED. Clarence Norris, 76, the last survivor of the Scottsboro
Boys, nine black teenagers unjustly convicted of raping two white
women near Scottsboro, Ala., in 1931, even though one of the women
withdrew her accusation; in New York City. After 15 years in
prison, including five on death row, Norris was paroled in 1946
and fled to New York City, where he worked in a warehouse. When he
was finally pardoned in 1976, Norris said, "The lesson to black
people, to my children, to everybody, is that you should always
fight for your rights, even if it kills you."
